Book Talk: Dividing Hispaniola
The Dominican Republic’s Border Campaign against Haiti, 1930-1961
Edward Paulino is Professor of History at John Jay College. His research focuses on race, genocide and borders in Latin America and the Caribbean. His work has been published in Genocide Studies and Prevention and supported by the Fulbright Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Professor Paulino is cofounder of Border of Lights, an organization that commemorates the anniversary of the 1937 Haitian massacre
and promotes solidarity with Dominicans.
Dividing Hispaniola: The Dominican Republic’s Border Campaign against Haiti, 1930-1961 is a study of Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo’s mid-20th century scheme to create a buffer zone on the Haitian-Dominican border, through an ideological campaign to portray Haitians as racially inferior.
