The Lavender Scare tells the unknown story of the U.S. government’s systematic attempt to identify and fire all federal employees discovered to be homosexual. Over a forty-year period, tens of thousands of gay men and lesbians were driven from their jobs or denied employment.
But, as the film explains, the actions of the government had an unintended effect: they thrust an unlikely hero into the forefront of what would become the LGBTQ rights movement.
The Lavender Scare is narrated by Glenn Close and features the voices of Cynthia Nixon, T.R. Knight, Zachary Quinto, and David Hyde Pierce, as LGBTQ hero Dr. Franklin E. Kameny.
Winner of more than a dozen awards for Best Documentary at film festivals around the world, The Lavender Scare will be released in theaters in June 2019 and will then be available on DVD and VOD. This is your chance to see it before its general theatrical release.
The showing will be followed by a discussion session with Josh Howard, the producer/director of the film, and Kevin Jennings, the executive producer of the film, who are both fellow Council Members.
There is more about The Lavender Scare and a three-minute trailer on the film’s website at www.theLavenderScare.com.
