Join novelist Lashonda Katrice Barnett as she discusses her 2015 novel  Jam on the Vine. The novel features Ivoe Williams, a black lesbian journalist from Texas who moves to Kansas City in the 1920s to start a newspaper. Inspired by real-life journalist Ida B. Wells, the novel looks at the difficulties and bravery those in the black press had in reporting lynchings, the emerging prison industrial complex, and police use of force, while also portraying the possibilities of individual empowerment.  This historical novel is beautifully written, and urgently relevant to events today.
