Event Description:
Grassroots Disaster Response During Superstorm Sandy: Successes, Failures and Opportunities
Date: Tuesday, October 14, 2014
Time: 1:30-3:30 pm Room 610H
Speaker: Devin Balkind, Serapis Foundation
Tens of thousands of regular New Yorkers without any disaster relief experience participated in Superstorm Sandy response efforts via ad hoc, self-organized groups. These groups performed a wide range of activities: acquiring and distributing supplies, mucking out homes, canvassing for needs and collecting real-time information about the situation on the ground in the hardest hit areas. During this talk, Mr. Balkind will explain how some of these efforts were organized, where they succeeded, where they failed, and how institutional relief organizations and government agencies can collaborate with them to make New York City a more resilient place.
