Dr. James Gilligan
An acclaimed psychiatrist, Dr. James Gilligan is the author of Violence: Reflections on a National
Epidemic, Preventing Violence: Prospects for Tomorrow, and Why Some Politicians are More
Dangerous Than Others, among many other books. Much of his life work has consisted of
researching the various biological, psychological and social phenomena that increase and
decrease rates of violence. Dr. Gilligan is on the faculty of New York University where he is clinical
professor of psychiatry in the School of Medicine, adjunct professor in the School of Law, and
collegiate professor in the School of Arts and Science. He is the lead author of the 2013 report to
the New York City Board of Corrections documenting abuses at Rikers Island prison, which helped
open up local and national debate on conditions there and in prisons around the country.
