Event Description:
The Center on Media, Crime and Justice at John Jay College (CMCJ) has selected 33 journalists as Reporting Fellows for its fourth year-long program aimed at strengthening national reporting on juvenile justice.
The fellowship program, supported by The Tow Foundation and the Annie E. Casey Foundation, will be launched Thursday, Oct 4th and Friday, Oct. 5th with a symposium at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City, entitled Children and Justice: Unfinished Business.
Speakers scheduled for the symposium include: Elton Anglada, Assistant Chief of the Juvenile Unit, Philadelphia Defender’s Association; Cara Drinan, author of “The War on Kids: How American Juvenile Justice Lost its Way; Kim Dvorchak, Executive Director, National Association of Counsel for Children; Carolyn Frazier, Children and Family Justice Center, Northwestern University; Marcy Mistrett, CEO of Campaign for Youth Justice; Vincent Schiraldi, former Commissioner, the New York City Department of Probation; and Karen Vastine, Senior Adviser to the Commissioner, Vermont Department for Children & Families.
“Over the past decade some 70 pieces of legislation in at least 36 states have enacted major reforms in areas ranging from raising the age of adult jurisdiction to removing youths from adult prisons,” said Stephen Handelman, Director of the CMCJ.
“This program is aimed at helping journalists take stock of what has been achieved so far, and get an early assessment of the work that still remains to be done.”
