DEADLINE FOR CAREER ENGAGEMENT FACULTY FELLOWSHIP PROPOSALS
Start Date: 4/10/2018 All Day
End Date: 4/10/2018

Event Description:

CAREER ENGAGEMENT FACULTY FELLOW INITIATIVE

Faculty members play an important role in both the academic and career
success of college students. For instance, research has shown that LatinX
students often seek out guidance from faculty in Latino/a Studies Departments
at Hispanic-Serving Institutions (Garcia & Okhidoi, 2015). Other research
has shown that faculty members play an out-sized role in college experiences
of low-income students and in connecting low-income students to services
on campus (Simpkins, 2016).

In recognition of this, the Center for Career & Professional Development
and the Teaching & Learning Center at John Jay College have created
the Career Engagement Faculty Fellow Initiative. The goals of this initiative are:

1. To bridge curriculum, pedagogy, and career development;

2. To encourage culturally-relevant and critically-conscious pedagogy and
mentoring strategies in the classroom;

3. To connect the work of the Career Center and TLC more seamlessly
to the community of faculty on campus;

4. To highlight specific need areas where the Career Center and/or
TLC should focus resources (i.e. specific student populations or
academic programs); and

5. To institutionalize and support the work in which
faculty are already engaging.

Career Engagement Faculty Fellows will partner with the two
centers for a full academic year (Summer, Fall and Spring) and
engage in the following ways. We anticipate a weekly time
commitment of no more than 5 hours.

1. Collaboratively design, implement, and publish/present research
on faculty engagement with student career planning and development;

2. Seek out methods to engage the broader faculty community to
support students’ career development and planning through program
and curriculum design;

3. Propose a faculty and staff peer education session during the
Spring 2019 Faculty Development Day;

4. Attend bi-weekly Career Center staff meetings (90 minutes); and

5. Hold a weekly drop-in faculty mentoring hour in the TLC (1 hour).

Faculty Fellows will be supported for the 2018-19 academic
year (Summer 2018 – Spring 2019). Compensation includes
a summer salary not to exceed $1,000 and a Fall and Spring
salary commensurate with position and rank.

Career Engagement Faculty Fellows must be full- or part-time members
of the faculty with permission of their department chair and a proven
record of research and publication. Part-time faculty must be scheduled
to teach no more than 2 3-credit courses per semester at any CUNY
institution combined.

The Career Center and TLC invite members of the full-time faculty to submit
proposals of potential projects.   To apply to become a Faculty Fellow for the
coming academic year, please submit a current CV and proposal of no more
than 3 pages (including relevant existent literature and supporting
scholarship) to Will Simpkins (wsimpkins@jjay.cuny.edu) and
Gina Rae Foster (gifoster@jjay.cuny.edu) no later than Friday, April 27. 2018.
