A talk with Ieva Jusionyte about her experiences as a first-responder on the US-Mexico border.

Professor Jusionyte is the John L. Loeb Associate Professor of the Social Sciences, Harvard University. The Anthropology Café is the speaker series of the Department of Anthropology, John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
In this talk, Ieva Jusionyte will describe her experiences as a firefighter-paramedic-ethnographer at the center of her award-winning book "Threshold: Emergency Responders on the U.S.-Mexico Border. " The book is a gripping study of the politics of injury and rescue in the militarized region where firefighters and paramedics are torn between their mandate as frontline state actors and their responsibility as professional rescuers, between the limits of law and pull of ethics. Through beautiful ethnography and a uniquely personal perspective, "Threshold" provides a new way of understanding the all-too-often painful human experiences of the border and the critical political issues with which we must contend.
