All are Welcome!

One Righteous Man tells the story of Samuel Battle, New York City’s first African American cop in the 2nd decade of the 20th century, and the racism he faced at
the hands of the public and his colleagues alike. Late in his life, Battle commissioned a biography from legendary Harlem Renaissance writer Langston Hughes. Discovering and reading Hughes’ manuscript inspired Browne to complete his own work on Battle.

Arthur Browne is Editorial Page Editor for the New York Daily News. He has dedicated 40 years of his career to chronicling the life of New York City. As a reporter and editor, he has covered the administrations of six mayors, from Abe Beame to Bill de Blasio, and coauthored the biography of Ed Koch, I Koch. In 2007, he led a team that won the Pulitzer for editorials that documented the illnesses afflicting 9/11 rescue and recovery workers.
