Ombuds Confidential
In many ways, the role of Organizational Ombudsperson seems to be the holy grail of jobs for
ADR practitioners. Organizational Ombuds are (usually) paid well and often enjoy a degree of
respect and prestige within an organization. Much like the role of mediator, the role can seem
shrouded in mystery as its practice is governed first by the practitioner’s commitment to
confidentiality. In fact, one could argue that an Ombuds does their job best when it looks as
though they are doing nothing. What do Ombuds actually do? And how does one become an
Ombuds? These and other pressing questions will be the topic of conversation on March 3rd.
Bathabile K.S. Mthombeni, J.D, M.S. is the University Ombudsman for Binghamton University.
She is also a coach and mediator, and the founder of Untangled Resolutions, a company that
provides mediation, workshop and process facilitation, leadership coaching, and organizational
development services. She is the founder of Come Abide Here LLC, providing Racial
Intelligence and Racial Mindset coaching, training, and dialogue facilitation services primarily to
White members of leadership teams and DEI committees.
Bathabile is passionate about helping people to learn how to communicate and resolve their
differences. She has taught classes in negotiation and conflict management and dispute
resolution at the graduate and undergraduate levels. She currently offers online workshops and
courses related to fostering dialogue about controversial issues and developing connections
across differences. Over the past 18 years Bathabile has helped thousands of individuals to
untangle their dilemmas and identify their best paths. She strives to create unique and
transformative experiences for her clients that reveal the essence of their truths.
Bathabile earned her A.B. in Sociology, cum laude from Princeton University, her J.D. from
Columbia Law School, and her coaching certificate and M.S. in Leadership and Organizational
Development from the Naveen Jindal School of Management at the University of Texas at
Dallas.
She is a dedicated human companion to her canine companions MuShu, Mandla, Carmel, Bambi
and Bella. She is an avid yarn crafter, podcaster/YouTube enthusiast, and a
singer/songwriter/guitarist who has performed on New York City’s subway platforms and once
lived in a tent. |
