According to the Sentencing Project between 1980 and 2019, the number of incarcerated women grew by 700% with a growth rate that was two times the growth rate of men. Recent studies have also found that trans women were 13x more likely to experience sexual violence while incarcerated than other population groups.

With these staggering facts in mind, the IIP will host a panel that highlights the experiences of formerly incarcerated women and trans women with a specific focus on the disproportionate impact incarceration has had on women and trans women of color. Criminal legal reform, specifically reentry and prison reform, has often centered men and their experiences with incarceration, over-policing, and reentry. Rarely, are there conversations that center the very unique experiences of women and trans women. The purpose of this panel is to highlight the unique needs of these individuals, the intersectionality of multiple identities and how they interact with the system, and the reform needed to center their experiences and humanity.

This panel will feature:

 ShanaKay Salmon
Creative Associate, Institute for Innovation in Prosecution

Grace DeTrevarah
LGBT Liaison & Senior Reentry Peer & Health Facilitator, The Osborne Association

Sharon Richardson
Founder & Executive Director, Reentry Rocks

Topeka Sam
Founder & Executive Director of The Ladies of Hope Ministries
