John Bergeron

A graduate of Greenfield Community College and the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York with a BS in Fire Science and Administration in 1972. In 1985 he was one of five fire chiefs awarded a fellowship to attend a three-week Executive Program for Senior State and Local Officials at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

Earned the Executive Fire Officer certification from the National Fire Academy.

 Started his long fire service career in Greenfield, located in western Massachusetts, where he served as an auxiliary, call and career firefighter advancing to the rank of deputy fire chief. Was later hired as the fire chief in Lexington, a Boston suburb, where he served for 17 years, followed by four years as the fire chief in Wareham, Massachusetts. Served for short periods as the interim fire chief in two smaller Massachusetts communities.  Elected as the president of both the Massachusetts Institute of Fire Department Instructors and the Fire Chiefs Association of Massachusetts. For 19 years chaired the Massachusetts State Fire Mobilization Committee that planned task force responses to major fires and disasters throughout the Commonwealth.

 Taught at the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy, various colleges, the Emergency Management Institute and the National Fire Academy. A consultant specializing in local fire department management studies and the recruitment and selection of fire officers, especially fire chiefs, for various fire departments in New England, the mid-west and some southern states. Following his fire service retirement he joined the Federal Emergency Management Agency as a part time on call disaster recovery planner and worked in 28 states, Guam and Yap on various emergencies and disasters.
