Event Description:
Economic Justice Speaker Series: Debt Collection and Wage Garnishment in the Black Community
October 19, 2015
1:40 PM - 3:00 PM
New Building, L.61
This John Jay Economics Justice talk with ProPublica reporter Paul Kiel and senior reporting fellow Annie Waldman will center on these findings, an exploration of possible causes for the racial disparities that have entered the debt collection system, and efforts being made for reform.
A new investigation by ProPublica is the first of its kind to comprehensively analyze the process and patterns of people most impacted by debt collection lawsuits. Focusing primarily on St. Louis, with data breakdowns also
provided for Chicago and Newark, the nonprofit newsroom found a consistently and dramatically disproportionate number of judgments and wage garnishments in black communities.
ProPublica’s interactive news app shows just how prevalent these suits are in black neighborhoods – sometimes with one suit for every four residents. Read the investigation and explore the news app, at propublica.org.
