Description:
Shooting reconstruction is a complex endeavor, requiring a thorough knowledge of bullets, firearms, and the physics of impact dynamics. This workshop will attempt to elucidate some of the situations encountered and offer solutions to questions that arise at shooting scenes, including ricochets, bullet deformation and trace evidence on bullets.

Several different types of ammunition will be discussed, along with their interactions with several different substrates commonly encountered. Attendees will also become familiar with evidence recognition, documentation, and recovery for laboratory analysis.

Agenda:
Module 1: “Basic firearm and ammunition nomenclature and operability”
Module 2: “Bullet ricochet”
Module 3: “Bullet interactions with substrates”
Module 4: “Determining bullet paths at the scene”
Module 5: “Practical exercises”
Station 1 --- Bullet ricochets
Station 2 --- Trace evidence on bullets
Station 3 --- Powder patterns on garments for distance determination
Station 4 --- Field test for bullet impact
Station 5 --- Rapid shear- bullet holes in synthetic garments
Station 6 --- Determining bullet paths
Module 6: Wrap-up and discussion. Certificates of Completion given to attendees
