Event Description:
In walking 11,000 miles in New York City, Bill Helmreich has learned much about resolving and avoiding conflict. His lessons are based, in part, on encounters with gang members, immigrants, and engaging with people in general. The lessons come both from studying the changing faces of neighborhoods over time, and from observing the daily conflicts he saw in parks and diners and on the streets and sidewalks.This talk will provide case studies of what happened and what didn't happen.
WILLIAM HELMREICH is Distinguished Professor of Sociology at the Colin Powell School at City College of NY & CUNY Graduate Center. He is the author of seventeen books, including The New York Nobody Knows; The Manhattan Nobody Knows; What Was I Thinking: The Dumb Things we Do and How to Avoid Them: and The Things They Say Behind your Back: Stereotypes and the Myths Behind Them. Articles by or about him have appeared in the New Yorker, The New York Times, Newsday, and other publications and he has appeared on Sunday Morning CBS News with Charles Osgood, Oprah, PBS, and other shows.
