In Their Own Words: Sex Worker Narratives
Start Date: 10/29/2014Start Time: 4:15 PM
End Date: 10/29/2014End Time: 5:30 PM

Event Description:

In the United States, criminalization and stigma make it very difficult for many sex workers to speak publicly about their experiences. And in the media and other public forums, “experts” often speak for sex workers to emphasize the negative aspects of their work. To challenge these trends and highlight sex workers’ complex and diverse experiences, this panel gathers sex workers and puts their stories first. Students and faculty will meet members of the Red Umbrella Project, a New York-based nonprofit that “amplifies the voices of people who have done transactional sex, through media, storytelling, and advocacy programs” (redumbrellaproject.org). After Red Umbrella members share their stories, the audience will have the opportunity to ask questions and peruse copies of the Project’s journal, Prose and Lore, which is now available at the John Jay College Library.
