Dispute Resolution for Blockchain and Smart Contracts
Start Date: 10/4/2018Start Time: 8:00 AM
End Date: 10/4/2018End Time: 10:00 AM

Event Description:

This Roundtable Breakfast will feature Amy Wan, a renowned entrepreneur and thought leader in cutting edge technologies, who will be using her insider’s knowledge to talk to conflict resolvers, in language we can understand, about the uses of “blockchain” and the implications it creates for the creation of relationships and the enforcement of agreements. It will not be a Tech Talk.

With the advent of the Bitcoin and Ethereum cryptocurrencies, blockchain and smart contract technology have taken off with a lot of hype.  Dispute and conflict resolvers need to be aware of how new technology and entirely new ways of contracting will fundamentally change the way people interact, especially in business; how disputes will arise; and how conflicts will be resolved.  It is estimated, for example, that in 2017, over $1B in value was lost in smart contracts.  Already, contracts are getting so smart that they can contain *within* them the mechanisms for resolving disputes that may arise *under* them.  What does that even mean?  This session will cover what blockchain and smart contracts are, the state of the smart contract industry, and where traditional dispute resolution practitioners, service providers, processes and models fit in with this future.

Amy Wan is Founder & CEO of Sagewise, building a dispute resolution infrastructure for smart contract disputes. She chairs the EOS Alliance Dispute Resolution and Arbitration Working Group, and has authored the Bloomberg Law practice guide to ICOs and Lexis Nexus' Private Equity practice guide. Previously, she was a Partner at a boutique securities law firm and General Counsel at a real estate crowdfunding platform. Amy is also the founder and co-organizer of Legal Hackers LA, which programs around the intersection of law and technology; was named one of ten women to watch in legal technology by the American Bar Association Journal in 2014 and one of 18 millennials changing legaltech by law.com in 2018; and was nominated as a Finalist for the Corporate Counsel of the Year Award 2015 by LA Business Journal.

Amy has also worked in international regulatory and trade policy at the U.S. Department of Commerce, and was a Presidential Management Fellow at the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Department of Transportation. She holds an LL.M. in Public International Law from the London School of Economics and Political Science, a JD from the University of Southern California Gould School of Law, and a BA in Biological Sciences from the University of Southern California.
