Disability/Race”  - a conversation with Mark Travis Rivera”

The College’s Committee on Diversity and Inclusion invites all to attend a conversation on disability and race with Mark Travis Rivera. “Disability/Race” explores the intersection of disability and race, with a particular focus on people of color communities and how disability is viewed, discussed, and understood. The discussion will tackle language (“that’s so retarded”), media representation of people of color with disabilities (or lack thereof), and the stigma that’s associated with race and disability.

Mark Travis Rivera
Mark Travis Rivera is an activist, choreographer, dancer, feminist, and writer. He is the Artistic Director and Founder of marked dance project, an integrated dance company for disabled and non-disabled dancers; inspired by the fact that he was born with cerebral palsy, which affects his mobility skills. A dynamic, innovative, and driven speaker, Mark discusses intersectional identities from a Latino, gay, gender non-conforming, and disabled perspective. He has spoken in front of audiences at Harvard, New York University, Fairleigh Dickenson University, Rutgers University, and San Francisco State University, just to name a few. His honest, engaging, thought-provoking, and sharp perspective on life will move, inform, and inspire people to tap into their own potential and to live their purpose.
