James Cappiello is a longtime member of the John Jay College community. James earned his B.S. (1990) and M.A. (1992) in Criminal Justice from John Jay College. Upon graduating from John Jay, James embarked on a career in juvenile justice, working as a counselor of justice-involved youth at the New York State Division For Youth.

In 1997, James switched careers and became a parole officer with the New York State Division of Parole. Over the next 25 years, James held numerous positions of varying responsibility at the Division of Parole (now known as the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision). Over the years, James was a parole officer covering a "regular" caseload, a "special offender" parole officer, a full-time instructor of firearms and defensive tactics, a special deputy US Marshal assigned to the NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force, a senior parole officer, and a bureau chief.  James is currently an Assistant Chief at the NYS DOCCS Office of Special Investigations, where he oversees all fugitive operations in the downstate region of New York. James is eagerly anticipating a well-earned retirement scheduled for the summer of 2024.

In 2002, James started his teaching career at John Jay. Since then, James has been an adjunct lecturer at the John Jay College Department of Sociology. James regularly teaches Penology and Probation/Parole courses but has also taught Juvenile Delinquency, Deviance, Criminology, and Intro to Sociology. Over the years, James has assisted hundreds of students with obtaining internships and gaining acceptance to graduate school. James is incredibly proud that there are currently 13 New York State parole officers who, at one time, were his students at John Jay.

James has been married for thirty years to a wonderful woman who is an Assistant Principal with the NYC Department of Education. Together, they have raised two children and currently reside in Brooklyn. James is an avid distance runner in his spare time, having completed thirty-four marathons and five ultramarathons. On 11/6/22, James will attempt to end his thirty-fifth marathon when he runs in the NYC Marathon. In addition, James is the head coach of a Brooklyn youth track and cross-country team. James finds working as a running coach of kids to be one of the most rewarding aspects of his life.

James is eager to meet and network with our students. Take advantage of this opportunity to learn the techniques needed to succeed in the field, network with the people within, and see how you can get a head start.
