Reverend Dr. William J. Barber II from North Carolina has emerged as one of the leading social justice and civil rights leaders in the US today. In 2013 Rev. Barber directed the outrage of NAACP members and supporters, and launched the “Moral Mondays” movement—a series of protests against the state legislature’s action, including the so-called bathroom bill; the country’s most restrictive voting law; and gerrymandered voting maps.
For the past three years, Rev. Barber along with the Rev. Liz Theoharis, have led an effort to revive Martin Luther King’s Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival. The New York Times and The Washington Post have profiled him and his efforts, with the Times writing, “To his admirers, Dr. Barber, a gifted preacher with a big-tent vision, is the strongest contender to the Rev. Martin Luther King’s mantle.”
