Americans are emerging from the pandemic to scare headlines about a surge in violent crime this summer. But are the headlines telling the real story?
Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott heads the list of VIP speakers in a special webinar series on August 18 and Aug 19 organized by the Center on Media, Crime and Justice at John Jay College (CMCJ) to help journalists report in greater depth and understanding on efforts to address the rising levels of gun violence in at-risk communities in the Midwest and elsewhere in the country.
The series will focus on prevention and intervention strategies that have been used, with varying effect, before and during the coronavirus outbreak―many of them piloted by community groups themselves. Leaders of community intervention programs in Chicago, Cleveland, Philadelphia and Sacramento will discuss what’s working, and what isn't.
Other speakers include: Thomas Abt, director of the National Commission on COVID-19 and author of :"Bleeding Out"; Shani Buggs of the Violence Prevention Research Program at UC-Davis; David Muhammad, executive director of the Institute for Criminal Justice Reform, and Anthony Smith of Cities United.
The project is underwritten by the Joyce Foundation and the Jacob and Valeria Langeloth Foundation.
